Ever wondered about terms like ‘CSI’, ‘FEI’, ‘5* level’ or ‘Nations Cup’? These are often used in the showjumping world. As a spectator of a showjumping competition, it’s useful to know where these terms stand for.
Read along to discover what makes a CSIO5* so special:
The basics of showjumping
Showjumping is an equestrian discipline where horse and rider complete a course of jumps, aiming to clear all obstacles without penalties. Penalties can be incurred for knocking down a rail (4pen), refusing a jump (4pen), or exceeding the time limit (1pen/ second). The goal is to achieve a “clear round,” where no penalties are assessed, leading to a jump-off to determine the winner. The rider who has the least points at the end and the fastest time, is the winner.
FEI and the Star Rating System
The FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale), which is the global governing body for equestrian sports, organises and oversees these competitions, ensuring stability and high standards. A CSIO5* (Concours de Saut International Officiel) is the highest level of international showjumping competitions in the equestrian world.
Events are classified by a star rating system, ranging from 1* (entry-level international competition) to 5* (elite level). A 5* rating signifies the highest level of difficulty, prize money, and prestige, attracting top competitors from around the world.
What Makes a CSIO5* Special?
1. Elite competitors: Only the best horses and riders participate in CSIO5* events. Competitors often include Olympians, World champions, and leading figures in the sport. Their presence elevates the competition, making it a showcase of top-tier talent and skill.
2. High stakes: With significant prize money at stake, often reaching hundreds of thousands of euros or dollars, the competitive intensity is unmatched. This financial incentive draws elite competitors and adds an extra layer of excitement for spectators.
3. Challenging courses: The courses in CSIO5* events are designed to test the skills of both horse and rider. They feature complex combinations of jumps, demanding precision, speed, and flawless technique. The design of these courses is the work of the world’s best course designers, adding to the prestige.
4. Nations Cup competitions: CSIO5* events include Nations Cup competitions, where teams from various countries compete against each other. This team aspect adds a layer of national pride which makes the competition even more thrilling. At the Brussels Stephex Masters, the CSIO5* Henders & Hazel Nations Cup will be held on Friday the 30th of August.
5. Global prestige: Winning or even participating in a CSIO5* event significantly enhances the reputation of rider and horse. It is seen as a testament to their exceptional skill and consistency at the highest level of the sport.
