The Future Stars classes for young horses opened today at the Brussels Stephex Masters. First into the spotlight were the six-year-olds, who faced a 1.25m course in the Sablon Arena. The opening victory went to Toemme de Regor Z (Chacco Blue x Cento | Breeder: Stal De Regor | BWP), guided to success by Germany’s Christian Ahlmann.
Tomorrow the seven- and eight-year-olds will make their debut. Show voice Senne Vandenberghe looked ahead and reflected on the remarkable track record of these classes. “Of the 21 winners in the past eight years, no fewer than 14 have gone on to reach the very highest level of the sport. Five already impressed at the 1.50m level, and nine are now jumping at 1.60m level,” Senne explained.
That makes a win here a serious sign of future greatness. “Indeed,” he continued. “Gilles Thomas has topped the class several times, with horses like Qalista DN (1.60m), Lavanoche T&L Z (1.50m) and Elfra Van Beek Z (1.50m). Other 1.60m references include Berdenn de Kergane (Laura Kraut), Solid Gold Z (Christian Ahlmann), Stargold (Marcus Ehning), Instit de Jucaso (Jérôme Guery), Diva (Emma Augier de Moussac) and Carlotta 232 (Emanuele Gaudiano). But perhaps the most striking story is that of Is-Minka: this Mylord Carthago mare won the 7/8-year-old class here with Steve Guerdat, and returned last year to capture the CSIO5* Henders and Hazel Nations Cup presented by STX Finance with the Swiss team.”
The Future Stars are not just a stepping stone – they are a true forecast of tomorrow’s champions. Who will shine this year? Find out tomorrow from 12:50 in the brand-new Dansaert Arena.
